Substance Abuse Treatment

Substance Abuse Treatment

If you are having problems with alcohol or drug use it doesn’t mean that you are weak or unable to change. Drug addiction is complicated, and it takes more than willpower or good intentions to quit.

There are many effective services for people who are suffering from a substance use disorder. One of the most proven forms of treatment is counseling or Intensive Outpatient Programming, To strive towards recovery, counseling can involve helping you improve and repair other problematic areas of your life at home, at work, with friends, or in everyday situations.

Revitalized Behavioral Healthcare Services for Substance Abuse:

Substance abuse treatment and family therapy frequently go hand in hand. It is often stated that addiction is a family disease; all members of the family unit suffer from the negative consequences of the single-family member’s substance abuse problem. No matter how much time an individual spends working toward sobriety, if the most important people in his or her life are not part of that recovery, it can cause problems. In all ways, the family is a system. Our goal and mission are to revitalize the family and support healthy relationships in our community. If there is one broken part of any system, the entire setup can fail. Family substance abuse counseling explores dynamics such as:

  •  How certain family members have enabled the person with a substance abuse problem and how to change that behavior
  •  How familial relationships, as well as actions and conflicts, can spur substance-seeking behaviors
  •  How different family members can support sober living after treatment or during recovery.
  •  Genetics, including the impact of one’s environment on gene expression, account for about 40% to 60% of a person’s risk of addiction.
  •  Environmental factors that may increase a person’s risk of addiction include a chaotic home environment and abuse, parent’s drug use and attitude toward drugs, peer influences, community attitudes toward drugs, and poor academic achievement.
  •  Teenagers and people with mental health disorders are more at risk for drug use and addiction than other populations.

Psychotherapy, or individual counseling, has become one of the cornerstones of drug treatment services. Most rehab programs feature two key treatment elements: detox and medication therapy (where applicable) and counseling (individual and group programs often based on the 12-Step model)

Individual counseling addresses both the symptoms and root causes of substance abuse and serves as a monitor of the recovery process itself. In this way, therapy works to address the past drug addiction, present recovery, and the client’s future.

During ongoing individual counseling sessions, a recovering substance abuser can expect the therapist to incorporate the following approaches into therapy:

  •  Acceptance
  •  Cravings management: Teaching strategies to make new, healthy decisions at critical trigger times, like when experiencing drug cravings
  •  Motivation: Encouraging abstinence through different life-affirming techniques.
  •  Commitment: Working to create a lifelong recovery plan.

RBH offers intensive outpatient services to adults with mental health and substance use diagnoses. RBH’s approach is to deliver substance use disorder and IOP programs in a holistically based fashion. The program is offered three to five days per week, three hours per day, and includes some evening program hours. The program is offered in a group setting and provides informational and group counseling approaches. The group addresses alcohol and drug education, disease concepts, harmful consequences, dual diagnosis education, relapse prevention, developing support networks, family roles, and more. Counseling approaches may include cognitive-behavioral, and person-centered. The focus is to achieve a chemically free lifestyle.

Activities and Services:

Group sessions are focused on withdrawal, recovery, relapse prevention, mood management, effective communication, and other topics that may be relevant to a participant’s recovery. The group sessions are either process or psycho-educational in format. Process groups have a free format where clients share and process their current challenges/stressors or anything that might be interfering with their recovery. Psycho-educational groups are more structured and focused on covering a range of topics that are crucial to recovery and healing.

Areas Targeted

IOPs target cognition, affect, and psychophysiological symptoms. Affective components are concerned with becoming aware of, identifying, and expressing feelings, as well as finding healthy ways to manage varying levels of emotional intensity. For instance, anger, fear, loss, grief, and sadness may be evaluated in regard to the role they may play in the pathology. Cognitive aspects of a program may comprise problem-solving skills, coping skills, and action planning, particularly as it pertains to problematic situations and relationships. This may also include the evaluation of self-talk, self-defeating patterns, irrational thinking, and conditioning. The psychophysiological aspects of the program concentrate on bodily processes that may exacerbate symptoms. This may involve working with illness, episodic and chronic conditions, overall health and wellness, pain management, and fitness.

“Aftercare” is a general term used to describe any ongoing or follow-up treatment for substance abuse that occurs after initial programming. No matter the setting, treatment provider, or methods used, the goals of addiction aftercare programs are the same and include:

  •  To maintain recovery from substance abuse.
  •  To find ways to prevent relapse.
  •  To achieve a life filled with rewarding relationships and a sense of purpose.
  •  Truly support and provide assistance until the patient is ready.

One reason that continuing treatment is essential in all situations is that longstanding substance abuse can, in some cases, alter the normal functioning of the brain. Some of these changes do not instantly reverse once use ends. In fact, they can last long after substance use has terminated.

The physical impact of addiction is often accompanied by several psychological changes—affecting thoughts, feelings, and behaviors that may persist even after the substance is removed from the body. The physiological changes associated with addiction and their potential lasting impact on both mental and physical health services reaffirm the need for long-term treatment.
